WA Premier Mark McGowan has announced the imminent demise of WA's controversial 'hard border', which bans travellers entering the state unless they meet strict exemption requirements.

People from every state except NSW and Victoria will be allowed to travel to WA without needing to quarantine, but will have to have a temperature test at the airport and possibly a COVID-19 test.

WA Premier Mark McGowan flanked by Health Minister Roger Cook and Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson. This would mean the 'hard border' would be dropped with every jurisdiction except NSW and Victoria. "Western Australia's hard border has and will only ever be in place to protect the health of all Western Australians. I cannot stress that enough."

"But this cautious move to a controlled border does not change the strong and stringent measures we have had in place to protect WA, like hotel quarantine for all international arrivals, strong measures at our ports and hotel quarantine for maritime crew, hotel quarantine for international flight crew, and no change to the 14 days of self-quarantine for New South Wales and Victorian arrivals.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Wednesday that WA was "obstinate and unreasonable" for keeping its border closed.

Worried about losing in the high court?

Get rid of state government. This myopic politics is crippling the economy and innovation. State borders are only useful for sport.

Haha

Here we come

Good to hear, manage it not avoid it..

Interesting the LNP opposition in WA pushes for travel bubbles with different states; the NZ bubble debacle shows that this approach is effectively unenforceable. You open up or not

About time. The hard border was excessive.

Clive will be happy now.

So even though I live somewhere that has had no cases for week, I still can’t visit my family because I am in Victoria

Government gets new health advice as debate looms on WA border policyThe WA Government prepares to consider new health advice from the state's Chief Health Officer as pressure mounts for it to announce when the state's hard border will be lifted. Strange times Palaszczuk & McGowan will not table the medical advice stating BORDERS MUST remain CLOSED.....could this be because NO SUCH MEDICAL ADVICE exists ? Ah ! but all decisions are based on medical data, science & epidemiology...can I say BS, their decisions are POLITICAL Course it is 🙄🙄🙄 Just open the borders

WA hard borders is an 'incredibly confusing' and 'arbitrary system': Human Rights Watch | Sky News AustraliaHuman Rights Watch Researcher Sophie McNiell says Western Australia's hard border is 'an arbitrary system' that is 'incredibly confusing'.\n\n'We interviewed 17 people who had their applications to enter WA rejected, many of them numerous times, one woman seven times despite the fact her mother was ill in hospital,' she said.\n\n'Part of the confusion is there are not enough resources going into this - the West Australian police are managing this.\n\n'There's no formal review process if your application is rejected... there desperately needs to be more transparency.'\n\nMs McNiell noted people who apply on grounds of employment are, on the whole, gaining approval more quickly than those applying on compassionate grounds.\n\nShe argued many people became unemployed as a result of the pandemic and if the borders were in place because of a public health emergency, then it shouldn't matter if one was employed or not as to the risk of bringing COVID-19 into the state.\n\n gee, that was strong...what is it with our piss weak human rights people..pathetic Only to people who watch Sky News or read the Murdoch press. Most of us have a pretty good handle on it. It matters to McGowan if you are coming into WA to bring money into the State. If it's on compassionate grounds, he's not interested as there's no money in compassion!
