NSW treasurer says referendum is an ‘opportunity to unite the nation’ and the party’s backing would ensure broad support for yes vote

“This is an important step forward so we can recognise the past but also move forward as one.”Kean said the NSW government would be seeking “compensation” if the federal government pushed ahead with its plan for a cap on coal prices, again saying the state had not been provided with sufficient detail on the proposal.

Wednesday’s planned national cabinet meeting, where the issue would have been discussed, was cancelled after Albanese contracted Covid-19. “We need to see the detail of the commonwealth’s plan to solve this national problem [including] the modelling about how we’ll keep prices down,” Kean said.He said that NSW energy consumers and taxpayers “need to be no worse off”.

“The NSW government already provides $300m in energy rebates every year and the commonwealth is yet to put a single dollar on the table [to deal with] energy costs,” he said. “If they are going to handball this problem to us then we need an indemnity to the costs we may need to pay under free trade agreements or to keep energy companies afloat, and compensation for lost royalties which help fund our schools and hospitals.”

Sound like he’s running for the leadership

Matt Keen seriously wants to kill liberal As long as people like him are in prominence, there is zero value in a swing voter going for lib. It's just a pale imitation of Labor, and no nobody wants that. They might as well vote for the real thing

It’s up to Albanese to cap coal prices: KeanNSW Treasurer Matt Kean has forcefully pushed back against an Albanese government proposal for states to introduce a cap on coal prices, saying the issue of soaring power bills required a national solution. The only cure for high prices is high prices - if coal is expensive other sources will be found (gas, renewables). Capping coal won’t fix a broken system. Just a legislative subsidy for generators. $whc coaltwitter Nothing like Liberals working with Fed Gov to help solve our power prices. NSW gov could co operate but I don’t think LNP know how to work in with others. Selfish & short sighted. Libs think they are so entitled to rule. I stand with Minns & NSW Labour in their upcoming election

Indigenous Voice report authors 'disappointed' by argument the proposal lacks detailAuthors of an Indigenous Voice to Parliament design say they went through their report with many parliamentarians and are disappointed by those who now argue it lacks detail. Albo can't be trusted, his record shows this notmypm The voice bestows benefit based on race, it is inherently racist. That simple. An excellent way to encourage people to vote *no* is to accuse them of bigotry, better to accuse Labor of stupidity for bringing such an ill-conceived proposal. I ain't signing a blank cheque... Maybe these authors should get their act together.
