NSW Liberal Treasurer Matt Kean is in Egypt to share a centre-right take on responding to climate change.

this week, NSW Treasurer Matt Kean is a believer in the need for urgent action on climate change. But there’s something that marks him out: he’s a member of the Liberal Party.

This could make COP27 an unhappy hunting ground for a lone Liberal figure like Mr Kean. As the conference began, his federal colleague, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, publicly questioned the whole premise of the summit’s main agenda item on “loss and damage”. Mr Kean was in London before heading to Egypt, where he found that “climate change is no longer a conversation in the corners”, and he heard “the very clear message from investment banks and financial institutions, which is that climate risk is investment risk”.

“Of course there is still the major problem of new fossil fuel projects, and on that front both the Coalition and Labor are failing to put a stop to it.” He also lobbied behind the scenes for Australia’s bid to host COP31 in 2026 – pushing the barrow for Sydney. The Albanese government is proposing to co-host with the Pacific, which gave Mr Kean an opening.
