Matildas' draw with USA may have been dull, but it sets up their Olympics campaign nicely

The Australians finished third in their group and are at a slight risk of elimination depending on other results, but it would take something freakish to see them miss the quarter-finals.The final 30 minutes of the USA game saw both sides sitting back, clearly happy with the draw. It was excruciatingly dull, but neither team will care.

The crossbar rattled early on too when teenager Mary Fowler, called into the starting line-up at the last minute, headed against the bar following a flick-on from a corner.Kerr was not heavily involved, but showed how gracefully she could create space whenever the ball came in her vicinity. In the 28th minute she won a corner by dropping her shoulder and firing a shot from distance, which was deflected wide.

It was a wake-up call for the Matildas, who continued to push forward, winning a number of corners and free kicks in dangerous positions, mostly delivered effectively but without success by the educated left foot of Steph Catley.
