A 47-year-old American bridge has dramatically collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship in the early hours of the morning, as emergency services scramble to rescue at least seven people believed to have fallen into the water below as a result.

Vision of the bridge’s horror fall into the water showed it break apart and collapse in on itself within the space of seconds, leaving no time for vehicles to make it across to the other side if they were on it at the time. Coast Guard petty officer first class Matthew West revealed it was Singapore-flagged cargo ship, the Dali -which is about 948 feet long – that hit the bridge, according to the New York Times.

The Maryland Transportation Authority shared a traffic update on X about 3.20am, warning vehicles away from the scene.
