Homeowners already under huge strain have hit back at what they claim are the government’s “baseless accusations”.

some of the unit owners of Mascot Towers trying to “force the government’s hand to pay for the remediation work” to fix the troubled building.

The residents of Mascot Towers were evacuated from their apartment complex in Sydney’s inner south on a Friday night in June after multiple parts of the building began to deteriorate rapidly. Engineers monitoring the building in the months since have found the building needs four distinct phases of remediation work. The owners recently agreed to pay a second special levy of $7 million, plus GST, after rejecting a proposed levy of $10 million plus GST.

The new $7.7 million levy would be payable over nine months. Since then, a number of the apartment owners have said they simply cannot afford to pay the levy, costing between $5000 and $14,000 per month.
