After 128 AFL games, Brandan Parfitt will play in his home town Darwin for the first time on Thursday. Better yet, the occasion comes as he has re-established as a constant in the Cats’ midfield.

At the start of 2023, Brandan Parfitt loomed as Geelong’s most natural successor to retiring midfield great Joel Selwood.

“I just sort of rode the rollercoaster of being a fringe player and was just sort of up and down and got a bit stressed and had anxiety as to whether I was in or out. I just didn’t focus on the process of getting better each week. He started the season in fine style before a slight dip last week when he was one of the Cats’ midfielders unable to match the quick feet inside the centre square of Port Adelaide stars Jason Horne-Francis and Zak Butters.

Those skills will be especially useful against Gold Coast on Thursday in Darwin’s humidity, which makes the ball slippery, emphasising the importance of gaining territory.
