Parliament is a patriarchal system, designed by men and for men. Not only does it look like a gentleman’s club, with its leather lounges and walls adorned with portraits of white, bearded men; it also operates like one.
Surely it’s long overdue for politics — and all our workplaces — to catch up, so people can have a life, care for their families and take on leadership roles. Unless we find that balance, our parliaments will never be truly representative. They will always be skewed towards those who benefit from gender inequality.
