Teachers expect many children will be withdrawn from sitting NAPLAN tests in Queensland this year, as the test window opens tomorrow. Queensland Teachers’ Union president Cresta Richardson says parents place little value on NAPLAN as a way to judge their children’s educational progress. “Since NAPLAN began in 2008, Queensland has had a high rate of parents choosing to withdraw their children from the annual testing in years 3, 5, 7 and 9,” she says.

“This choice is being made to avoid the high levels of stress and anxiety experienced by students in this high-stakes but low-value testing model.” Teachers say parents get a better idea of their child’s progress through reports and parent-teacher nights than NAPLAN. The withdrawal rate in Queensland last year was 5.3 per cent, versus the national average of 3.1 per cent. Meanwhile, schools will receive individual student and school results for reading, numeracy, spelling, grammar and punctuation earlier in the school year. Preliminary results will be available early in term two, about four weeks after the test period ends on March 2
