Industry leaders in the disability care sector are pleading for help to keep their doors open and for personal protective equipment for carers amid the coronavirus outbreak

, warning highly vulnerable disabled Australians are at risk of losing their critical care services.

"With limited cash reserves to support our clients and workforce through the COVID-19 crisis, a huge number of disability providers – including some of the largest – confront insolvency within six months, if not earlier, leaving no service for those people with disability to return to once the pandemic has been brought under control," the letter, sent earlier this week, says.

"You wouldn't shut an aged care residential home, but if we cannot provide for the most vulnerable, or stay financially viable that is what many residential care facilities are facing in the sector," Ms Louis-Smith said.has been told one carer centre has purchased a 3D printer out of desperation to make protective face masks for its staff, while other groups have been told to "go to Bunnings" to source protection equipment.

It also wants the industry to be defined as a "critical service" aligned and equal to aged care and for all carers to get priority access to COVID-19 testing.
