Officers are searching for two men seen running from a unit complex after one man was shot in the head and another in the arm.

A man has been shot in the head during an apparent altercation in a unit in Sydney's inner west on Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the unit on East Street, Five Dock, at 3.45am following reports of possible gunshots being fired. Inside the unit, they found one man with a gunshot wound to the head and a second man with a gunshot wound to his arm. "Officers are searching for two men seen running from the complex soon after the shooting," NSW Police said in a statement.

The injured men were taken to Westmead Hospital. The man with the head wound is in a critical condition, the other man is believed to be stable.Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit
