Police were called to help a distressed woman at a Bungalow home about 5.30am, where they were allegedly approached by an armed 21-year-old man.
Detective Superintendent Mick Searle said officers were threatened by the man, before he allegedly stole a marked police car, leading police on a lengthy chase.Investigators will allege the man was later seen at an industrial strip in Cairns this morning. Locals there told 9News the man had caused a disturbance at a workshop, with people in nearby homes and businesses told to lock their doors."There were also two police patrolling and telling people to get inside and lock up."
Police allege the man then stole a marked police car, leading police on a chase to Woree on the city's south side. "He is alive and conscious at this stage," Searle said."If we are of the belief that someone has doused themselves in petrol, we will not deploy a taser."Searle could not confirm how many times he was shot or how he drove off with a police car.
"I haven't spoken to the officer personally but yes, from my experience in these incidents, it is very distressing for the officer who fires the shot and also for those surrounding that that are witnesses to it," Searle said.No police officers were injured.
