Aaron Kenneth Campbell attacked a man with a machete at a car wash in Canberra 's south in February 2022.A man with a "long and distressing" history of engagement with the criminal justice system has been sentenced to more than ten years in jail for a string of offences includingHowever, he will be eligible for parole in August this year.
The court heard the victim then reversed his car into a pillar before Campbell again approached the car and attacked the victim with the machete, leaving him with a laceration on his scalp and finger. Under cross-examination, the victim admitted he had taken the drug ice, in addition to some medication, and had not slept for two days.Campbell was also sentenced for additional offending which took place in April 2022 alongside co-offender Ivan Djerke.
A day later, Djerke and Campbell conducted another robbery, this time in Holt where Campbell hit one victim with a crowbar and the pair stole a Bluetooth speaker.In her sentencing remarks, Justice Louise Taylor said Campbell was an "example of the failure of the criminal justice system to effect meaningful change".
The court heard Campbell had been a long-time drug abuser and had started drinking alcohol at age eight and was using heroin, methamphetamine and amphetamine from his early teenage years.
