A suspected thief is fighting for life after an alleged break-in at a fish and chip shop in Geelong in Victoria's west. 9News

It's understood the man in his early 20s was allegedly hit with a cricket bat by the man before police were called to the scene.A suspected thief is fighting for life after an alleged break-in at a fish and chip shop.

9News understands the alleged thief realised the man was outside, and used a chair to try and ward him off. The alleged thief then came through the broken glass holding a knife.The man was flown to hospital. The neighbour remained at the scene and called emergency services, and spent the day speaking with police.The injured man, believed to be in his 20s, was flown to hospital in a critical condition.
