A man found in possession of a Hong Kong independence flag became the first person to be arrested under Beijing's new national security law for the city, police said Wednesday.

China passed the controversial security law for Hong Kong on Tuesday in a historic move that critics and many western governments fear will smother the finance hub's freedoms and hollow out its autonomy.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Wednesday hailed the law as the “most important” development for the city since it was handed back to China.
