A critical investigation is underway after a suspected domestic violence incident in Sydney's west.

Just before 8.50am on Friday, police rushed to a home on Crawley Avenue in Hebersham following reports of an alleged assault. She was treated by paramedics and taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said officers attempted to speak with a man, who was known to the woman, before he suffered"self-inflicted" injuries.
