Nissan Australia chief executive Stephen Lester says a lack of leadership in embracing electrified cars is out of step with the world’s leading economies.

The company, which sold more than 62,500 EVs around the world last year, will launch the longer-range variant of its Nissan Leaf electric car within months, aimed at addressing “range anxiety”, which is seen as a barrier in the domestic market toward greater uptake. The Leaf e+ can travel up to 384km on a single charge, a 40 per cent increase on the 270km of range of the current model.

US President Joe Biden has announced a plan to use his government’s purchasing power to drive the take-up of EVs, promising to replace up to 650,000 fossil fuel vehicles with electric ones made in the United States. But Mr Lester said countries that had been the most successful in making a switch had made a point of providing direction.

“When you consider the access to renewable energy that we have here, when you consider the distance that people actually drive, the adoption of technology, some of the infrastructure that is already built, and the predominance of people living in homes with car parks or driveways already ... there is no reason why we can’t be a global leader.”

Luddites Trolls and Troglodytes under the bridge to the future with Scottyfromarketing waiting with a lump of coal to throw at any inventiveness..Sickening they had electric cars and busses when I was a kid in the 50s now we wait on Moronsin to lead us.

Aus the top few front runners of Industrial revolution,is no way found in the Clean Energy AI revolution. Like African and most Asian nations missed the Ind revolution, AUS will be relegated 3rd word status in a generation if she don't act now.

Fossil fuel would have been dead years ago, if not for the big OIL companies lobbying (read bribing Govt.) to discourage environment friendly policies. Leadership Vision FutureIsAnAttitude ElonMusk broke the mould by launching Tesla. Waive Rego off electric cars. solarpower

Some government concessions would motivate buyers to choose EV. e.g. Free parking in some areas around CBD. Low registration fee More charging stations Tax breaks for companies with EV fleet Lower or no GST for EV purchase Low tolls Etc Etc

Maybe because our labour cost isnt 20c an hour !

We are going backwards with this “leadership”

BJafari Government claimed to not want to limit choice for Australians, but their policies definitely limit our choices! Ensuring we don’t get the cleanest and best technology in cars, including EV.. And then there is the subsidies to fossilfuels!

Every new taxi and Uber should be an EV from today on. From 2023 no business tax breaks on any vehicle not an EV. From 2025 no new ICE vehicles registered. We don’t make any so it’s not impacting negatively at all.

Yes why is our govt dragging their feet when transitioning to electric? When in doubt follow the money.

Oh their ambitions only consist of land theft, making money for self, being abusive to those less fortunate and creating methodologies that prevent innocent from obtaining justice.

says the guy that wants to sell more Electric cars

I mean, his agenda is more to do with selling more of his company’s cars and therefore making more money, but yeah, he has a point.
