The company behind some of Australia’s favourite chocolate bars has announced it will transition to recyclable paper-based packaging in a “major step forward in its sustainability journey”. 7NEWS

Three of Australia’s favourite chocolate bars, Mars Bar, Snickers, and Milky Way, will be receiving a sustainable makeover next year. The new paper-based packaging can be recycled via kerbside recycling bins readily available to all consumers.Trials of the paper packaging have been completed locally out of Mars Wrigley’s factory in Ballarat, Victoria.

First established in 2018, the targets aim to phase out unnecessary single-use plastic packaging and see 100 per cent of Australia’s packaging either recyclable or compostable. “Mars’ ongoing investment in local research and development has allowed us to be agile and create solutions that have a positive impact on our environment, meet our stringent quality and food safety standards but are also convenient for our consumers to recycle via kerbside recycling,” he said.

“The launch of our new paper-based packaging is a significant step for us towards our local and global packaging targets.”The transition to sustainable packaging is a move to meet the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation’s 2025 National Packaging Targets.Head of APCO Chris Foley says Mars Wrigley’s move was an “excellent example” of innovation to meet packaging targets.
