Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. A five-year-old giant African pouched rat called Magawa, however, has to be one of the world's most unlikely life-savers.
"The work of HeroRAT Magawa and APOPO is truly unique and outstanding," said PDSA director-general Jan McLoughlin. The PDSA Gold Medal is the animal equivalent of Britain's George Cross. The charity also awards the Dickin Medal, for military animals.APOPO trained Magawa in his native Tanzania to detect the chemical compound within explosives by rewarding him with tasty treats - his favourite being bananas and peanuts. He can scurry across an area the size of a tennis court in just 30 minutes, something that would take four days using a conventional metal detector.
Wonderful congratulations to all involved
He's done more for landmine clearance than Lady Diana EVER did.
Amazing and brave animal, well deserved honour. Conservatives
Where will the rat keep his medal?
I find it impossible to feel warm and fuzzy about the real nature of this poor creature's existence, just because the hoomans hang a medal around his neck. The rat doesn't care about medals. It's not like he has a choice. He just wants to be fed.
Oh my goodness ❤️
What a great story & an amazing little fellow 😘💙🐭🐁🐭

Family of seven stranded in UK for six months spiral into debt'We just live week by week. When we first got here, originally, the plan was for a five-week holiday. And we had to stretch our savings, our money, from five weeks to five months.' 9News '....visit Paul's family in March.' - Traval ban was issued right after, they had a week or two to come back. They did not. It is only their fault. Goverment shouldn't help them. As sad as this is, who would have left to travel to Europe in March? And with 5 small children too. At that point the pandemic had taken hold of Europe including the UK... Why did they not simply cancel or postpone their plans? You fucked up. I wanted to take my kid back during this and guess what I never. Only people to blame are yourself.
