Panic buying led to toilet paper shortages, which led to an increased use of wipes, have resulted in a 3-tonne fatberg being pulled from Mackay's sewers, engineers say.

The shortage of toilet paper as a result of coronavirus panic-buying has been blamed after a record 'fatberg' was pulled from Mackay's sewerage network.

Mr Hyatt said the problem wasn't new, with council clearing more than 600 chokes in the network each year, at a cost of more than $250,000.He said only the three Ps should be flushed down the toilet; pee, poo and paper.
