Spanish authorities have a suspect in custody and are investigating the attack as a potential act of terrorism.

A man wielding a machete allegedly fatally injured a sexton and harmed a priest in attacks at two churches in the Spanish city of Algeciras before being arrested, Spain's interior ministry said, in what authorities are investigating as a possible act of terrorism.Spanish authorities are investigating the attacks as a potential act of terrorismThe suspect was arrested in the southern city and is in the custody of Spain's National Police. The ministry did not identify the man.

The assailant allegedly then went to a second church, the Nuestra Señora de La Palma, where he allegedly attacked and killed the sexton, Diego Valencia, outside the building.Spain's National Court said a judge has opened an investigation into a possible act of terrorism.
