Scott Morrison will push for the world’s largest free trade agreement and discuss economic and security issues at the East Asia Summit - but the Australia Institute’s Ebony Bennett doesn’t have high hopes for the Prime Minister’s performance.

“The East Asia Summit is critical for maintaining open communications across Asia,” she told Sky News. “It’s a forum that Australia needs to work effectively.

“Unfortunately without a coherent Asia policy or strategy for engagement in the region, I think the most we can hope for is that Scott Morrison shows up.” The Prime Minister and other world leaders will discuss an agreement that will cover nearly half the world’s population and 30 per cent of global gross domestic product.
