A man who duped a Brisbane woman into handing over more than $100,000 is given a suspended sentence after his barrister argues prisoners are facing increased hardship amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A man who duped a Brisbane woman into believing he was a diplomat and into handing over more than $100,000 has been given a suspended sentence after his barrister argued prisoners were facing increased hardship amid the coronavirus pandemic.

His defence barrister, Chris Minnery, told the court Emeh had not been allowed to see his partner since Queensland prisons moved to COVID-19 restrictions. Three days later, the pair professed their love for each other, but 'Dobbins' urged her not to tell anyone else about their relationship. In December of that year, Emeh was drafted into the swindle and communicated with the same woman via phone and text message, falsely telling her that he was a diplomat named 'Mark David' who had taken over from 'Miles'.

While it is not clear the extent of the benefit Emeh derived from the scam, the court heard he spent $8,000 of the cash on a car for his girlfriend.
