England’s captain Joe Root is limbering up for this summer’s Ashes series not only as the best-performing batter in the world over the past year, but also as a leader who has implored his team to dispense with some of the vulgar verbals of the past.

“So we’ll just try to let the cricket do the talking and try to stay away from any sort of anything on the field that happened in the past. Certainly that 2019 series, there wasn’t much really going on on the field, from a distance. However Anderson attested to the way Root had grown, leading the way with the bat and in the field. This year, Root has peeled off 1455 runs in 12 Tests, more than 500 runs clear of his nearest competitor Rohit Sharma, and his increased confidence has been evident elsewhere, too.

“We’re so fortunate to have him, we just need a few players now to get on the back of that and try to score big hundreds themselves,” he said. “He’s one of the best manipulators of a innings.
