Hours after the border between the country's two most populous states was closed for the first time in 100 years, queues of travellers are facing a long wait as they attempt to cross into NSW.

On the Albury-Wodonga border, most people appeared to be showing their licence to cross into NSW, meaning they were likely local residents.

The closure came into force the same day Victoria recorded 191 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily tally since the beginning of the pandemic. Hours before the border closure came into effect, the Service NSW site allowing people to apply for travel permits crashed shortly after it was launched at 7.30pm on Tuesday due to"high levels of demand".

"In the interim, travellers will be able to demonstrate their eligibility to cross the border to police by carrying relevant documentation based on a category of exemption," they said.

Long queues into NSW as border closure enforcedMotorists face long waits to get into NSW as police enforce the first border closure in a century between Australia's two most populous states. bpreiss Are these people being C-19 tested at the border? If not, how do we know that they aren’t importing the virus? I have no faith that all people who must self-quarantine do so fully or properly. bpreiss This was an ill planned knee jerk reaction by GladysB Two things 1) closed too early without an adequate plan in place to accommodate school holiday makers from NSW visiting Victoria 2) knew there was a high probability of this happening but no high level strategic plan in place
