This year’s Melbourne Writers Festival unleashes the spirits of characters past and stories still to be told … here’s a taste of what’s to come.

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time. The haunting theme of next month’s Melbourne Writers Festival will find local and international guests gathering round to talk about ghosts of all kinds – from the characters that linger long after the last page to the withering modern phenomenon of ghosting. As the festival’s artistic director, Michaela McGuire, puts it: “Ghosts are a classic literary trope, and many different spectres haunt our lives and imaginations.

What I realised, as I went ghost-hunting in the pages of the book I had written, is that these ghosts mapped the questions I hadn’t even understood the book was asking: The gun-slinger is probably a ghost, or soon to become one and you cannot believe what you are hearing ..Cool Water Stop that cat wailing. Play something decent, put on Hank Williams, get that fellow off the gramophone. They are still sitting around on old worn stumps and kerosene tins – longing for missing family members, longing for missing country.

I reckon my family would have been as excited as I was to see how this haunting song could become such a larger-than-life haunting on a movie screen.. She is in discussion with Mykaela Saunders at State Library Theatrette on May 12.One need not be a chamber to be haunted, one need not be a house; the brain has corridors surpassing material place. There is a tiny, custard, art deco house on a main street of North Carlton, squashed up against a shopfront like a limpet on its side.
