The West Australian government is spending about $2 million a year on locum doctors in an outback town, a situation that advocates say is a short-term fix and points to a poor culture of looking after remote health workers.Locum doctors receive higher salaries to entice them to work in remote areasKununurra Hospital services the East Kimberley — a region bigger than Victoria but with a population of just over 10,000 people.
"It's not wise. It would be far, far better if there was proper and good local engagement of doctors and healthcare professionals," he said. Dr Duncan-Smith said permanent doctors, who could accumulate specialist knowledge about the region, were better positioned than locums to provide a high quality of care.
"Across WA Country Health we see a poor culture of support for doctors and healthcare professionals and those who are local people," he said. "Certainly, many of our members talk about the benefits of living in the Kimberley region and how they love it," she said.
I've found locums are sometimes better than the permanent doctors.
Government intervention long passed for strong Medical Scholarships to encourage more Rural Youth back to the regional areas.
try working in these places .. its not the money thats the problem but you cant discuss why and nevre wil lbe able to because you would just be labelled a racist and villified especially by the ABC and the comrades!
Yet we have fools from the cities gagging to flee to the countryside
