Australians loading up on computer monitors and power drills during the coronavirus lockdown have helped Wesfarmers report record sales growth at its Bunnings and Officeworks businesses | domp

Australians loading up on computer monitors and power drills during the coronavirus lockdown have helped Wesfarmers report record sales growth at its Bunnings and Officeworks businesses, with both chains seeing double-digit jumps in revenue over the past five months.

Sales at hardware chain Bunnings have so far surged 19.2 per cent across the second half of the financial year, more than three times the growth seen in the December half, the Perth-based conglomerate told investors on Tuesday morning.Office supplies chain Officeworks' sales soared even more, jumping 27.8 per cent for the second half compared to 11.5 per cent growth in the first.

Discount department store Kmart did not see a similar jump in trade, however, with sales up just 4.1 per cent, down on the 7.6 per cent growth in the prior period. Wesfarmers pinned this decline on low demand for apparel during the shutdown and supply issues affecting some key categories such as homewares.

Australia did 'absolutely not' have to lockdown | Sky News AustraliaFormer chairman of The Department of Anaesthetics Dr Michael Levitt says Australia did not need to implement stringent lockdown measures to combat COVID-19, however they are unlikely to acknowledge this since “governments hate admitting mistakes”. \n\n“I can understand in early March that some people didn’t know what would be occurring and that governments would panic,” Dr Levitt told Sky News.\n\n“But curiously we never had a lockdown for influenza, SARS, MERS and Ebola and you wonder why the reaction this time was so different,” he said.\n\n“We don’t know why they’ve continued the lockdown though.\n\n“The governments hate admitting mistakes, it would be pretty hard for a government to admit they overreacted and we didn’t really need to lockdown the entire economy and destroy it,” he said.\n\n“And so they persisted with this fiction that we need to persist with a slow release of lockdown.”\n\n\n\nImage: Getty\n As a father, I am pleased of the data from our country compared to others.
