The ‘critical’ step paves the way for phase 1b of the rollout to continue despite a slow start to phase 1a, delayed overseas shipment and severe weather impacting some deliveries.

On Sunday evening, the Therapeutic Goods Administration approved the Australian AstraZeneca vaccine which was being manufactured by CSL in Melbourne.

“Today’s approval is a critical and very exciting milestone in Australia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” a TGA spokesperson said on Sunday evening. Despite delays in the initial phase of the rollout, he said the government was confident phase 1b would be substantially completed by the middle of the year.

About 300,000 doses were due to be delivered to locations around the country for the first week of phase 1b. Most clinics had received their deliveries, but Professor Kidd could not confirm how many were still waiting for supplies. But Australian Medical Association president Dr Omar Khorshid said bad weather was not the only thing holding deliveries up.“There’s also, we understand, been some practices around the country that have not received their vaccine, which is due to some sort of problem with the logistics. That’s disappointing, but not surprising,” he said on Sunday.

Doesn't stop them getting or spreading the virus Appalling. If Japan won't cancel the Olympics, countries across the globe should boycott. We are in the midst of a global pandemic FFS, millions have lost their lives, and it is an irresponsible, unnecessary, and frankly obscene indulgence for the Olympics to go ahead.
