One of the latest UK coronavirus variants is up to 100 per cent deadlier than previous strains, British researchers say. They say it's also up to 70 per cent more transmissible. Follow live.

A highly infectious variant of COVID-19 that has spread around the world since it was first discovered in Britain late last year is between 30 per cent and 100 per cent more deadly than previous dominant variants, according to British researchers.

The B.1.1.7 variant was first detected in Britain in September 2020, and has since also been found in more than 100 other countries. Scientists say it is about 40 per cent to 70 per cent more transmissible than previous dominant variants that were circulating. "Coupled with its ability to spread rapidly, this makes B.1.1.7 a threat that should be taken seriously," said Robert Challen, a researcher at Exeter University who co-led the research.

Good work boris

How about some actual news worth something. Lou Ottens, the inventor of the cassette tape, died at age 94.

jurylady5 We're not out of the woods yet. Play it safe people!

Lmfao.

Clickbait BS

Thank you science. Great reminder that we are dealing with an unpredictable threat and that we should remain vigilant.

More fear tactics for control

It will never be like the flu! Until we all get Pfizer like our elitist PM, don't even contemplate, back to 'normal' borders!!!

. The Chinese govt said Covid was made in a US military bioweapon lab. The US govt said Covid was made by Chinese military. 60mins said pangolins in a wet market. But we'll never know. Anybody who disbelievea militaries can & do create viruses is ignorant of public facts. .

“between 30 per cent and 100 per cent more deadly”. What a pathetic study. Much like the CDC’s mask mandates and onsite dining comparison. Instead of fear mongering with headlines it would help to critically look at the study and have independent scientists review it

What a rubbish study!

Tired of all these studies that set out to reach media headlines. What is 100% deadlier? Is that double? Twice as deadly? How do you measure that? Trash and fear mongering from the ABC.

'I'm 100 per cent dinky-di': Chinese Australians rubbish questions of loyaltyChinese Australians face controversial questions submitted by the public for the new series of You Can't Ask That, and reveal the expectations and challenges they face from their parents, peers and even strangers. Chinese can't hold dual citizenship, if they're Australian, China doesn't want them and will probably gulag them with the rest of us if they invade. No one asked. Perhaps they can better profess their loyalty by publicly stating some criticisms of Xi Jinping & Communist China. Australians know how to separate ‘loyalty to country’ from ‘loyalty to Govt & Politicians’ but Communist China supporters can’t.

Asbestos found at more than 100 Queensland schools and the search continuesThe state government has already spent more than $6.5 million to extract asbestos from more than 100 Queensland state schools in this financial year alone. Audits of the hazardous material have been underway for years. There's so much in this article is very standard boring legislated compliance. Not all asbestos can be identified in a building and sometimes it slips through the gaps. The departments of education across Australia are often painfully thorough about dealing with it. No news here. Could easily be changed to 'Asbestos found at every school built prior to 1985'.
