The video captured octopuses, eels, bone-eating worms and scavenging fish munching on the remains of a baleen whale that fell to the seabed near the Davidson Seamount, off the coast of California. The find came on the final dive of a several-month operation by researchers from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Ocean Exploration Trust to document deep-sea coral reefs and hydrothermal vents across the central Pacific.

The whale was estimated to be 4-5 metres long and was lying on its back at a depth of 3,238 metres, according to the NOAA.
