Emergency crews are continuing to battle a large bushfire west of Ballarat in Victoria, with authorities urging nearby residents to leave immediately.

Loading..."We're doing a bit of work to try and slow the spread of the fire particularly around the area of Elmhurst," he said.There are still a large number of crew working on the fire both from the ground and from the air.The Maryborough relief centre was quickly opened at midnight last night and has seen a steady stream of people through its doors.

Agencies including Victoria Police, the Salvation Army, the Department of Family Fairness and Housing and the Red Cross are on site to provide a number of services as well as food. Michael Dridan was with one of the strike teams trying to protect assets around Raglan and surrounds."It got that close, we had fire on both sides of the truck and it was really, really hot.Kerrie Royal returned to her property in Raglan today to assess the damage."But at least she's up right. That's one good thing."Kerrie and her daughter couldn't catch Miss Mumbles the cat before evacuating but she was there when they returned today.

The ABC's Patrick Mitchell says while about 20 people spent the night in the centre, many more slept in cars outside because they had evacuated with animals.Confusion about whether it's safe to return homeRebecca evacuated yesterday with her dog and has been staying in her car at a relief centre."We're going to wait to get proper information before we go."
