MORNING BRIEFING: A NSW police officer is left with bite marks after an attack in a Casino carpark, while divers resume their search for a car that crashed into the Hawkesbury River.

A NSW police officer has suffered bite marks to the back of his thigh after a man allegedly attacked him — and attempted to swallow a balloon — near Lismore, in the state's north-east.

On Saturday, officers spoke to a man sitting in a car exposing his genitals outside a shopping complex in Casino. An identity check revealed there were multiple outstanding Queensland arrest warrants against him, police said. When he got out of his car, officers said, he was directed to cover his genitals. He then threw an item under his car and attempted to swallow a balloon, they said.The man was arrested and charged for assault and drug possession and was taken to Lismore Base Hospital after"ingesting an item" at the police station.Searches continue for a car that crashed off a bridge and plunged into the Hawkesbury River in Brooklyn, north of Sydney, last night.

Emergency services were called to the location about 9:15pm yesterday after the car was driven through a barrier on the Old River Pacific Highway Bridge.It is not yet know how many people were in the car.Metro services are not running in both directions between Chatswood and Tallawong due to a technical issue at Tallawong.Passengers are advised to delay travel, consider alternative travel options, or allow plenty of extra travel time until the replacement buses start running.
