Seventeen passengers were detained at Melbourne Airport last night after it was discovered they flew from New Zealand to Sydney and then caught a connecting flight Melbourne.
Victoria is not accepting international travellers due to coronavirus restrictions and the New Zealand quarantine-free travel bubble is only to New South Wales and the Northern Territory. Victoria's health department says its authorised officers do not have the legal authority to detain travellers on arrival, and Victoria has made it clear to the Commonwealth that NZ passengers who have not undertaken quarantine are not permitted to board flights to Melbourne.The Department of Home Affairs says the unexpected arrival of New Zealand travellers at Melbourne Airport last night is a matter for the states and territories.
