E-scooter rental giant Lime says its customers are spending less time riding on footpaths, releasing new data that suggests two-thirds of riders are on Melbourne’s pavements for less than 30 seconds per trip.
The company said the results show more than 75 per cent of riders spent less than 30 seconds per trip riding on a footpath, equal to about 4.2 per cent of their total trip. Nickless said Lime was now providing the data to local councils to lobby them for better riding infrastructure in areas of concern, including the CBD, where riders were more likely to feel unsafe and veer off roads and onto footpaths.Lime’s data showed the highest incidence areas of footpath riding are in areas where bike paths have not been provided.
Although authorities have struggled to improve rider behaviour, advocates say e-scooters can play a positive role in Melbourne’s transport landscape by providing a low-emissions alternative to cars on short journeys, and fill gaps in the public transport network. despite it being against the law and devices left strewn underfoot, putting the most vulnerable at risk.for dedicated parking spaces for hired and private scooters to stop them being left blocking footpaths.Lime’s Nickless said the data was being used to deploy foot patrol teams to areas where riding on footpaths was common to talk to riders and ensure they understand the rules in Victoria.
In the CBD, illegal footpath riding was mostly occurring on Lonsdale, Flinders and Spencer streets, while in Port Phillip, hotspots were Pickles, Danks and Carlisle streets. In the City of Yarra, it was mostly concentrated on Alexandra Parade and Burnley and Hoddle streets.
