Liberal MP Andrew Laming has criticised the “dissonance” between the symbolic invasion day marches and “actually making a difference in remote Australia”, adding the protests simply delay action on the ground and inflame debate.

| Mr Laming was slammed by Queensland’s Deputy Premier Steven Miles for tweeting, “Deny it’s Australia Day. That’ll help petrol sniffing and school attendance in remote Australia. #MorePracticalLessSymbolism.” Mr Laming defended his tweet as certainly not racist, commenting, if it was evoking such negative responses then the conversation over the dissonance between symbolically calling Australia Day ‘Invasion Day’ and taking action to practically make a difference was one needing to take place.

“In remote Australia, these kids don’t have the luxury of time to dabble in dates. “What we need to be doing is bringing non-indigenous and indigenous Australians together in cross-cutting connections through education, through job opportunities and lastly, looking at how welfare is undermining and corroding these connections.
