A Melbourne-based infectious diseases physician examines what it would take if we only worried about protecting the elderly or vulnerable from COVID-19 | OPINION

Some journalists and politicians have been saying that we just need to let the virus run and only worry about protecting the elderly or vulnerable. Given that would mean a lot more community infections – limited, it is hoped, to those at lower risk of death or severe infection – let’s look at what it would take to try to protect those who need protecting.

They would need to avoid public places such as supermarkets, shopping centres, parties, restaurants, bars or cinemas. And if they have children who are back at school, they would have to avoid all contact with them too. In fact, they would have to avoid contact with anyone who is going out into public areas that would lead to potential exposure.Perhaps it would be necessary for them to live on-site at the aged care facility to minimise the danger of the virus being introduced.

Particularly in the Victorian hospitals that have been dealing with this, many healthcare workers are already exhausted, made worse by having colleagues on enforced leave because of either being infected or needing to be in quarantine after being exposed.

It is hard, but is it doable? Yes. All the article saying is excuses. It definitely cost less than spending 1$billion per coronavirus death now while GDP going down. End lockdown. Stop making Australia a mockery. Enough!

Once out the bag the virus will typically run and run. Lockdowns can't go on forever. Further the case fatality rates typically drop drastically over time, to such a low rate that lockdowns become pointless - see europe

Has The Age reported the truth about Dan's lies yet? Any plans too?

It might just have to be the way that those in higher risk professions have to endure harsher restrictions for a period of time. Government is adopting a one size fits all approach which is impacting on the economy, livelihoods, education and general wellbeing of many more.

Great observations and article P_Charles_ID_Dr Thank you 👍

The Federal, aka ScottMorrisonMP response was 'how good is the footy'

What about infecting healthy workers with the virus, letting them heal and then send them over to aged care? They can be paid extra hazard pay to cover for the 0.001% possibility of dying.

Good theory, but with 6 months prep work, neither state or federal government could protect our elderly. Which should of been the priority from January. The common denominator in all our lost elderly folk is government. If the plan decides to change, those failures still exist

Another BS scare mongering article. Why can't PPE be inplace with appropriate protocols for hygiene? The aged care residents that copped this virus were let down severely by poor protocols, not by a virus that eats through plastic.

With Corona everything is easier said than done, so let’s just choose the option that allows us to keep living, and doesn’t kill livelihoods and devastate our cities and mental health! COVID19

Why Hydroxychloroquine can save life? Why none of the CCP officers gets the virus? Because they used Hydroxy chloroquine in December 2019 and controlled all the media and WHO to lie to the world saying Hydroxy is no use at all.
