It’s the race every driver wants to win, but for Leclerc this grand prix means more than history and prestige.

It meant Oscar Piastri finished a career-best second but lacked the chance to claim his first victory. Magnussen started last after being thrown out of qualifying for a technical infringement, but the Dane caused the decisive moment of the race with his botched move on Sergio Pérez attempting to make up ground exiting the first turn.

Magnussen argued he deserved room, having drawn alongside Pérez before the space between them evaporated. “It looked maybe a bit optimistic from Kevin but, I don’t know, Checo could also have maybe seen him and left room,” Hülkenberg summarised. Of the 16 surviving cars after the first-lap crash, 15 made their mandatory tyre changes and targeted making it to the chequered flag without making an in-race pit stop. Almost all of them succeeded, including the four leading cars.

When red flags were fluke occurrences, the chance to make free changes to cars and tyres was taken on the chin. Today, however, they happen frequently enough that the sport must seriously consider whether they can be better incorporated into the rule book. He ended his race on the spot. It was only lucky timing and circumstance that allowed Gasly to restart the race 10th, where he finished to score his first point of the year.

The team boss reportedly cooled down during the race, with Alpine PR telling Sky Sports that the comments were made in the heat of the moment, when those precious points seemed lost.
