Last week they hadn’t won a game in 25 years. Now Australia's women's goalball team are in the Paralympic quarter-finals | tomdecent

Australian Paralympic athletes Raissa Martin, Amy Ridley, Tyan Taylor, Meica Horsburgh, Jennifer Blow and Brodie Smith may not be household names but are helping to write the script for what could be the fairytale story of these Games.

Goalball is a sport that does not get a lot of love - nor funding - and most Australians wouldn’t have a clue what it is. On Saturday, there was a tidal wave of euphoria in the Makuhari Messe Hall when Australia created history by beating Canada 4-3.Blow, one of the Belles’ key players, thought the game had actually ended in a 4-4 draw because she couldn’t see the scoreboard.

“No one in the world would have believed we’d win that game,” said Corr, who held back tears, having been in charge of the team for a decade.Blow added: “Russia’s incredible, they’re a great team, but you know what? We’re a great team. We deserve to be here.”
