Exclusive: Demand for loan laptops another signal of a city divided by COVID | AlexSmithSMH

Sydney’s hardest-hit COVID-19 hotspots have had the highest demand for loan laptops to allow school students to learn from home, with more than one-third of the 22,600 devices needed in five council areas.

NSW Labor’s education spokeswoman Prue Car said the distribution breakdown of the devices and dongles were another stark example of how the Delta outbreak had divided Sydney. As of August 25, 1881 devices had been loaned to students in Blacktown, 1718 in Canterbury-Bankstown, 1542 in Fairfield, 1495 in Campbelltown and 1324 in Liverpool.

“A centralised policy response is likely to work for some and likely not to work for others,” he said.“The best thing [when a lockdown is needed] would be for the government to engage, directly and immediately with principals and teachers on the ground who know how to engage their communities.” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Sunday it was the government’s intention that all schools would begin returning on October 25, but that could only be achieved “if we maintain a reduction in cases in some areas”.“We have families with two, three or more kids all needing their own devices and using the internet while mum and dad try and work. Western Sydney families who have spent the longest in hard lockdown have had to manage an incredibly difficult few months,” she said.

The lockdown experience has been very hard on the family because Ms Graham said Ellectra was doing very little work at school other than “a few colouring-in sheets” and misses out on Zoom calls because she is at school.

The huge cost of our Covid freedomWith both New South Wales and Victoria hurtling towards more freedoms, there are concerns that this could come at a huge cost. Of course .record deaths in Sydney. 1000+ cases and restrictions ease? What a joke it all has become. It will never be possible to 100% guarantee safety for everyone. Never was, never will be. Even before covid there were other viruses, and there will be again. If that is the benchmark for re-opening, we will be in lockdown for the rest of eternity. Clearly that isn't viable.
