The Real Estate Institute of Queensland has launched a campaign against rent protection laws set to go through the state parliament next week, calling on 600,000 landlords across Qld to reach out to their Premier.

The laws include a six month ban on evictions and all non-essential inspections as well as a waiver on rental payments.

The REIQ said the proposed changes were too in favour of tenants. The institute said the protections could force landlords to sell their properties at a lower rate as a consequence of losing money through their tenants. Image: AP

43a6f0ce5dac4ea So many greedy landlords

There is nothing progressive in the government's policy for land tax rebates. The biggest land tax rebates will go to the richest landlords and tenants. Poorer landlords and tenants will generally get nothing. How do they justify it?

As if these landlord bludgers haven't siphoned off enough cash into their pockets through the negative gearing rort.

so who do these numpties think will rent their empty houses in the middle of a crisis where many have closed businesses and lost jobs?

If anyone has any objection to this, the first thing you should do is search how many investment properties they own in their portfolio. You’ll usually find it’s quite a few.

Victorian Government announces $500m package for renters and landlordsVictorian Premier Daniel Andrews announces a $500 million package to assist commercial and residential landlords and tenants during the coronavirus pandemic. The ad hoc manner by which so-called relief packages are being handed out would suggest governments had no idea as to the scope of a pandemic. They did not plan in any way for the worse case scenario. Time to think very hard when voting time comes around. Sending the state broke one day at a time this should be a federal responsibility, unlike the federal government the states will need to borrow to pay for this, and will need to either raise taxes or cut services in the future
