A new suite of immigration detention laws allowing the government to more easily deport people will be introduced in parliament today.

A new suite of immigration detention laws allowing the government to more easily deport people will be introduced into parliament today with just hours notice ahead of a crucial High Court challenge over the Commonwealth’s ability to lock up people who refuse to return to their own country.

“This legislation is dated Friday, last Friday. So the government has sat on this all weekend and has come to us at the last minute today to hand it over to us.” “What I’m saying to you is, I hope that the courts can do the job, because I can tell you, the government can’t seem to be able to do this.”The Coalition is calling for a late Senate sitting, adding the Coalition wanted to “do everything we can to support the government in doing the job that it is failing to do in keeping Australians safe”.
