Shadow health and aged care minister Anne Ruston has expressed her frustration at the Labor government for derailing the reforms to protect elderly residents in the aged care system.

'I am concerned': Anne Ruston slams Labor and Aged Care Minister Anika Wells for delaying 'signature' Aged Care Act reforms

"We find out this week that the signature piece of aged care going forward, the new Aged Care Act, has now been delayed and we don't even know how long it has been delayed for," said Ms Ruston. Ms Ruston said there were"great promises" made by Labor during their election campaign but the delays have now shattered the illusion of the delivery on those promises.. Picture: Sky News Australia

Ms Ruston said there was a"really, really critical situation" in the aged care industry which was compounded by the"confusion" caused by the delays in pushing through the reforms which have made many Australians"very nervous". In March, Ms Wells unveiled the final report from the government's aged care taskforce, which included 23 recommendations aimed at improving outcomes for the millions of Australians in care and securing the sector's ongoing sustainability.

"There isn't enough money going into a sector that needs more money. When you look at the demographic trends before us we're going to have an additional 3.5 million Australians over 80 in the next 40 years, the number of people aged over 65 will double."
