The federal government will scale back a contentious plan to mandate lower carbon emissions for about 1.2 million new vehicles sold each year, as voters express their doubts about forcing carmakers to meet the targets.
The survey of 1,610 voters was conducted from Thursday to Sunday, before the government revised the policy in a cabinet meeting on Monday night. The change means these models will be subject to a more moderate target to reduce emissions each year over, joining similar vehicles used by tradespeople and businesses.The government argument behind the change is that the SUVs have the same engine types as models that are treated as light commercial vehicles.
The revised Australian plan, developed by Bowen and King over the past few weeks after consultation with the industry, keeps the vast bulk of the original abatement. The Resolve Political Monitor surveyed 1610 eligible voters from Thursday to Sunday, generating results with a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
A broader question asked voters about the goal of the federal policy and found no clear majority for change.
