Labor’s Kristy McBain has taken Eden Monaro in a tight race to the finish line, but senior party members have called it ‘ugly’.

Speaking on ABC’s Insiders, Labor frontbencher Joel Fitzgibbon said it had been a difficult election and called the result an “ugly win,” but a “win just the same.”

“It has been an election fought on local issues … bushfire relief, COVID-19 and the economic impact, it’s been on droughts … I know there is a lot of work to do right across this electorate, and I’m required to work with anyone and everyone to get it done,” she said. Labor leader Anthony Albanese said Eden-Monaro candidate Kristy McBain would “look for solutions, not for argument” after the former mayor claimed her victory in the by-election.
