In stark contrast to the conclusion of 2023, when a battered prime minister and government limped to Christmas wounded by the loss of the Voice referendum and the original High Court decision on detainees, Labor entered Easter in a pugilistic frame of mind.
This perception was fuelled by the opposition deliberately keeping the focus on the Voice by asking about it repeatedly in parliament.“We weren’t the ones raising it, we weren’t doing Dixers on it,” Albanese has told confidants. It was a significant broken promise and Albanese, who had placed a premium on integrity, needed some convincing from Treasurer Jim Chalmers and others who had never been comfortable with the tax cuts.
Still in hung parliament territory but, as the prime minister tells people, not a bad position to be in given that in less than two years, the government has been hit with 13 interest rate increases, an inflation crisis and the greatest energy shock since the 1970s. There remains an outside chance that, should rates start falling in the spring, Albanese could call an early election.
Even with rate cuts, other events will constrain his timing. The Queensland election is on October 26 and there is no chance Albanese will go before then.
