Labor promises a commission to look at merging South Australia's top three universities if it wins government.

Labor has promised to establish a University Merger Commission to consider bringing South Australia's top three universities together as one if it wins the 2022 state election. The commission would consider combining three universities into oneOpposition Leader Peter Malinauskas said the future of the state's economy and its people depended on the success of its tertiary institutions, which were failing to make the world top 100 university rankings.

"Our economic prosperity and the future of our state is dependent upon our higher education system," Mr Malinauskas said. "It's absolutely essential that South Australia go back into the top rankings of the universities if we are to attract researchers here, if we are to keep our best and brightest students here and if we are to get students … from interstate and overseas to choose South Australia."But Mr Marshall dismissed the policy announcement as "embarrassing".

To achieve what exactly?

So that would be abolishing 2 universities

Who cares.

Yet another attack on the University sector, researchers and students. At a time when 11k have already lost their jobs, consolidating into 1x uni (dominated by Adelaide as Go8) will be a disaster for all. ⬇️ jobs, narrowed research agendas, ⬇️ course & student choice

a small state with 3 unis Tripling on cost Just 1 would be cheaper to run Sack them all too many academics

A coligate of Christian monopoly

That sounds like a recipe for disaster

fehowarth A National Integrity Commission is about restoring confidence in our democratic system and our public institutions. Labor’s ready to act - why won’t Scott Morrison

Do the Universities want to merge?

🤦‍♂️

Labor Party has been a 'victim of its own success': Joel Fitzgibbon | Sky News AustraliaLabor frontbencher Joel Fitzgibbon says his party has been “victims of our own success” as a recent research paper revealed Labor received more votes from those who went to university, than those who did not, while the opposite was true for the Liberal party.\n\nA recent paper from The Australian Population Research Institute revealed that over the past two decades an average on 55 per cent of people who did not go to university voted for right leaning parties like the Liberals and 54 per of people who went to university voted for Labor or the Greens. \n\nSky News host Andrew Bolt said, “it's now, simplifying, the liberals who are the party of the working man and woman. Labor who represent the elites.”\n\nMr Bolt spoke with Labor frontbencher Joel Fitzgibbon who, fourteen years ago, warned Labor was being 'torn between the new left, the wealthy, people who hate industry and the old Labor, the country Labor.\n\n“I’m comfortable with the fact that we’ve been, in a sense, the Labor party, victims of our own success,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.\n\n“The reforms of the Hawke-Keating years transformed the economy and gave opportunity that people would not have dreamed of previously.\n\n“Many of the, for example, blue collar workers we traditionally represented are now on pretty good incomes, living in nice homes, they often have negatively geared second properties, they have a boat or a jet ski.\n\n “You’ve now got this divide between those with assets, which are exposed to the market, they have superannuation investment, again, the legacy of the Labor years, they might have investments separately in the share market for example, and they aspire to continue to build wealth.\n\n“We have to be the party of aspiration, we have to give them every opportunity to meet those aspirations, but at the same time, we need to ensure we remain the party of lower paid workers, which are more typically found now unfortunately in the services sector, in the childcare sector and the aged care sect fitzhunter So educated folks don't vote LNP or watch Sky 'News' 🤔 fitzhunter He only just held his seat in a typical labor stronghold area. From all reports on the ground his not going to keep it next time but we'll wait n see. Joel will say whatever he thinks is popular until it's not then he swings like a gate in the wind, hard and fast. fitzhunter Success ? 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
