Federal Labor says it will make welfare management voluntary if it wins the federal election
Shadow minister for Indigenous Australians and social services Linda Burney said there were some circumstances where the party believed income management was appropriate, for example where domestic violence orders were in place, but it should not be broadly compulsory. People who volunteer to use the card have 50 per cent of their regular welfare payment set aside for basic necessities, which they are not able to withdraw as cash or spend on certain items, like alcohol and cigarettes.
Michael Liddle says some of his family members swear by the basics card because it saves their money."It sort of created a little division of fraudulent behaviour. There's loopholes all around it to get access [to cash] to satisfy gambling [and] alcohol needs."

If the system was working correctly with health, education and housing affordable and easily accessed this draconian management wouldn't be needed. The card is the equivalent of the English work house.

I admit, its unlikely a lot of people on welfare will opt for cheaper options being off this card would provide - that's why instead of this card (which cost millions anyway), welfare recipients should have free access to budget management services.
Of course, because Labor love spending money
This policy is not good for many vulnerable families - it will take food off the table
