Funding News

Northern Territory,Alice Springs

Labor MP Marion Scrymgour has called for a change in government legislation to designate organisations in the Northern Territory so they can be subject to scrutiny over how they spend funding from the federal government.

A $250 million package for Alice Springs and Central Australia was revealed in the federal budget last year with plans to improve education, health and infrastructure in the embattled Territory.

Labor MP Marion Scrymgour has called for the PGPA Act to be tweaked to ensure greater accountability of organisations using federal government funding in the Northern Territory. Picture: Sky News Australia “I’ve written to both Linda Burney and Mark Dreyfus to look at tweaking the PGPA Act to get greater accountability for all organisations, not just land councils, but all organisations that receive government funding – that they move under that legislation, which has oversight from the Auditor-General,” she told Sky News Australia host Laura Jayes.

Speaking just a day after the Northern Territory’s two-week youth curfew was extended for an additional week, Ms Scrymgour said local organisations needed to act more effectively to stop relying on government intervention.
