Finance Minister MathiasCormann says Labor is promising an ‘economic magic pudding’ because the party is announcing policies and surpluses that are ‘too good to be true’.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says Labor is promising an ‘economic magic pudding’ because the party is announcing policies and surpluses that are ‘too good to be true’. Opposition leader Bill Shorten has promised a budget surplus twice as big as the Coalition’s, a commitment Mr Cormann puts down to $387 billion in higher taxes the Labor Party will impose on Australians if it wins government.

Lamenting Labor’s surplus promise, Mr Cormann said he was awaiting the party’s costings, due to be released on Friday, to see if the party would be transparent or ‘hide things’. ‘When it comes to this proposition of a higher surplus, let’s see whether they’ve included the cost of increasing foreign aid, the cost of increasing the dole and the full cost of increased wages for childcare workers,’ he says.
